Tip of the Week: Windy Intervals

Not sure where we read this one recently, but it blew us away (hehe). Such a good, simple idea. If you're running a track workout in very windy conditions, consider running 600s, 1000s, any odd multiple of 200m. The reason? Start facing the right direction, and you can run less than half of each interval into the wind! You'll still have to adjust your expectations for the workout, but this little trick can make the effort more bearable.

Tryon Creek State Natural Area

MAP

The entrance to the park is off of SW Terwilliger between HWY 43 and Boones Ferry Road (11321 SW Terwilliger). The paved bike path runs parallel to Terwilliger. There are numerous dirt trails that criss-cross throughout the park.

Greenway Trail

MAP

From PRC, the trail goes two miles north and 1 1/2 miles south, wandering through the Greenway city park. This is a great place to get away from the traffic, noise, and bustle of the city.

Beaverton 7 Mile Loop

MAP

Follow the Greenway path north to the crosswalk at Hall. Cross Hall and continue on Greenway path. About 1/4 mile down, turn Right, go over the wooden bridge and follow the path until you hit the fish Bike Rack (2 miles)...this is Denny. Turn Left, go uphill on Denny and then turn Left again on Bel-Aire. Follow Bel-Aire as it curves to the right and go uphill. Follow Bel-Aire as it meanders into Hillcrest (3 miles) and then turn Left on Clifford. Follow Clifford to the right as it turns into Hall. Turn LEFT. Follow Hall to the crosswalk at Hart. Cross here and follow Hart to Sorrento, then turn Left. Sorrento leads down about 1/2 mile to Barberry. Go Right on Barberry. Go up-hill to 135th and turn Left. Follow 135th to Davies and turn Right. Davies winds around and turns into Brockman. Turn Left on Brockman. Follow Brockman just over 1 mile, where it runs into Greenway Park near Greenway Elementary just after you cross 125th. Take the path downhill to the Right and turn right at the bottom. This will put you less than a mile from PRC. This loop is just over 7 miles.

Beaverton 3 Mile Out and Back

MAP

Follow the Greenway path south toward Tigard. The path crosses two roads and bends a little to the right or west at the first crossing. The path continues for a total of about 1 1/2 miles and dumps out at Fowler Middle School track where you can add on miles if you wish. This is an out and back course that totals about 3 miles without adding on at the track.
